OU loses another recruit to Texas Tech
Hahahahaha! I think the word is out about Bob. If you want your kids to play football and get an education. You better think twice about Oklahoma. OU currently has the lowest graduation rate in the Big 12 Conference.
This one is something called a Middle Linebacker.

We also got two more commitments on Sunday. By my count, that means Tech only has 2 or so schoolies left. Mike Leach always has grey shirts. Also, this is the first recruiting class in school history with 4 blue chippers. I believe our previous high was 2. Then there is still two blue chippers left to decide, both being WR's.
It looks like that trend is over of Tech losing out on blue chippers just before signing day. I will call it dead if we land Mr. Kraig Appleton. We already flipped Eric Ward from OU, and he is already taking classes.

Rivals.com reported Sunday afternoon that linebacker Brandon Mahoney of Fossil Ridge High School in Keller, Texas, has decommitted from Oklahoma and has given a verbal commitment to Texas Tech. It's the third Sooner decommitment in less than month to a Big 12 South school, and the second who switched to Texas Tech. Mahoney visited Texas A&M last week. Previously, Darius Jones, an athlete/defensive back from Marshall, Texas, switched his commitment from OU to Baylor, and Eric Ward, a wide receiver from Wichita Falls, Texas, changed his pledge to Texas Tech. OU now has 22 verbal commitments in the 2009 class. Prospects are allowed to give non-binding verbal commitments to any school until they've signed a letter of intent. National signing day is Wednesday.

First time for everything
Eric Ward, the stud receiver switched his commitment from OU to Texas Tech. Here is the best part. He has decided to enroll into Tech this Spring.
I'm sure this has happened before, a recruit switching from OU to Tech, but I just cannot remember....

Ward said Tech’s academic record helped factor into the decision. The Red Raiders led the Big 12 Conference with a 79-percent graduation rate in the NCAA’s latest report released last fall. Oklahoma was a conference-worst 46 percent.
“I want a degree,” said Ward, who plans on majoring in criminal justice and sociology. “Football is not going to last forever.”

There is already a time suckage problem around here. Then you add the fact that Sirius and XM merged their programming this week. There is a channel devoted to Led Zeppelin, which in and of itself means there is a God and he likes me. No less than three of my buddies have proclaimed it the "Kashmir channel." HAHA..greatness! Between Facebook, internet poker, Raiderpower.com, and the Kashmir channel, plus that whole work and sleep thing. Is there time for Maggie?
My college football team is undefeated and is consuming my thoughts. I'm happy for about a day after a game then this dread-anticipation-hope-typical tech-is this for real-so awesome to be us for once feeling comes over me. I don't know if i can continue being this happy. It's uncomfortable.
9 more days until kickoff. Do you realize that it has been over a calendar year since the beloved lost a football game!

Texas Tech football Q and A
Q: Who do you think will win on Saturday?
KF: We will. UT hasn't played anybody. They are overrated and they will be exposed as frauds on Saturday night.
Q: WOW! That is quite a statement. Care to elaborate?
KF: Sure. Whoever said 'defense wins championships' is a moron. On Saturday night your going to see actual student-athletes wearing red scoring touchdowns. Maybe 10, but more likely it will only be 6 or 7 touchdowns. Texas is going to score, just not as many.
Q: What is the reason for the rise of Texas Tech football?
KF: Mike Leach could possibly be a half-human, half-omnipotent being. I see we Tech fans much like the Isrealites that followed Moses out of the oppression of the Pharoah. "Pharoah" in this scenario is probably Texas, but could be Oklahoma although we have beaten them 2 out of 3 years.
The other theory is that the world is coming to an end shortly, and God is rewarding our long suffering with some kind of BCS or Conference Championship. I doubt he grants us both, because i think he only votes in the USA Today poll, but something would be nice.

KF: I was thinking that we would probably annex West Texas A&M at that point. Those folks aren't real Aggies. We share a same language and culture with those people and I think its finally time that they become legally part of the Raiterland. I'm not saying that this would be their name, but North Texas Tech has a nice ring to it.

The Mormons leapfrogged us even though we both had bye weeks. We just need to find a way to win a game in Manhattan, KS this weekend and not worry about this hooey. Although, it is an interesting experience thinking about the possibilities.
1.I think Alabama is the best team right now.
2.I just do not understand how Florida is losing games with that much speed and talent.
3.We have 4 Big 12 Conference schools in the poll to play yet on our schedule (UT, OU, KU, and Okie Lite)...... NO Missouri however, which is a huge relief. We do not match up well with them.

Expectations
My analysis starts by simply stating, this 2006 Texas Tech football team underachieved to our expectations. Maybe the expectations were too high after a 2nd place finish in the Big 12 and a Cotton Bowl berth last season. Few could argue that a better receiving corps could be found in the nation. I thought our experienced defense would be good, not great, but good. The new Quarterback was one of the highest rated recruits in school history. Great things were gotten with less talent in Lubbock. We had already come along way in just a few seasons and the schedule looked favorable for a great run.
Then the ineligibility plague hit, costing Tech several of its prize recruits and one impact defensive lineman. Jarrett Hicks, the most talented receiver in school history was also out pending yet another waiver from the NCAA. Jarrett would get back but only after the dam busted in Ft. Worth. The losses were in key areas and they hurt Tech all season.
Then the season started, a nice win over the improved SMU Mustangs in Lubbock. I thought we were off to the races again, but I was so wrong.
Tech squeaked by the UTEP game in El Paso in overtime. Had the ball not doinked in off the upright for a field goal, Tech may have very well lost that game.
3 points in Ft. Worth. By far the worst loss in the Mike Leach era. Packed and partisan Tech away game. It was terrible to watch and I suspect that the Frogs will never let us forget that game. Tech never crossed the 50 yard line in the second half. Despite the good performance from a defense left on the field most of the game, 30 points is rarely enough for us, much less THREE.
Two weeks later we fool Texas A&M again. We also fooled ourselves. Tech had that game won easily had it scored in the second half. We let the Aggies back and then let them take the lead. Only the remarkable play at the end saved the day for Tech. I was hoping that they had finally shaken the inconsistent play. The highlight of my season was being there in person. It is always great to beat the Aggies at Kyle Field.
The next week, Missouri is gifted two touchdowns from interceptions in back to back offensive series. The Homecoming crowd was stunned and angry at the performance. It only gets worse when the Red Raiders get blasted in Boulder by winless Colorado.
Expectations were that Iowa State would finish us off in Ames. But somehow our football team put together a great game and won. Probably the best overall performance of the season. The monkey was finally off the back with a 21-0 lead, at home, against the Defending National Champion Texas Longhorns.
The monkey got back on in the second half. Tech failed to score and Texas caught up and then passed us. Despite the obvious errors of Big 12 officials, Tech should have put them away anyway. We had them beaten.
We also had Oklahoma beaten in Norman, but again the offense fails to score in the second half. It's emotionally tough to have the giants down only to watch us cut the ropes, let them go, and watch them crush us.
Higher expectations do not include moral victories. Thankfully, Tech had just enough on Senior Day to beat back the last second throws in the end zone by Oklahoma State. Again, that game shouldn't have come to that.
I also forgot Baylor. To our teams credit, they put Texas aside and didn't forget to beat Baylor.
It was a tough season, and after it was fitting that we didn't know where we were going to play in a bowl game. We didn't know if our Coach was leaving. We didn't know who to blame, although many of us know how to shoot blind. When we finally found out our destination, we didn't really know what to expect from our opponent. Tech fans, if honest, didn't know what to expect from our own team.
So here we are, days after the greatest comeback in bowl history. I am so proud of our Texas Tech Red Raiders. They went through alot this season. In my opinion, they could have quit at any number of times this year and I think its a credit that they never did.
38-7 deficit with 7:47 to go in the third quarter after giving up an 18 play drive.
That is a mountain. After a year of not meeting expectations. Nobody but them really believed it could be climbed. Some will say different and I will flatly say they are not telling the truth. There is a lesson here. Maybe we shouldn't worry about expectations and instead believe we can achieve. That applies to more than just football.
I learned something else:
No matter the sport or the season, its always tough to be a Red Raider fan. That is what makes it fun.
I was going to finish by giving an in depth analysis and finger pointing of who needs praise, get fired, or is to blame for the overall season. But I think now I will skip it. Even though it appears we took two steps forward and two steps back this season, the victory in the Insight Bowl was a comeback.
My expectations for next season:
13-0 and playing for National Championship.
I want to thank my friend Helmut. Helmut and I attended the 2004 Holiday Bowl in San Diego and I think I speak for both of us when I state, that was the greatest moment in Texas Tech football for us. We have seen some great ones over the last 14 years, and we sure have been to some rough games too. It seems this season we had a tough loss every other week. But through it all, we still bleed the Scarlet and Black. Helmut is the man and always makes sure I have a seat. I appreciate it. Guns Up brother!

Typical Tech
All I can report is the sound inside the Fox and Hound after THE FIELD GOAL went through MUST be the sound you hear when you enter the pearly gates. I was thinking as Trlica lined up to kick for the tie, that the universe owed us for the Bama kick in Dallas.Tech fans DID NOT know how to react. Sure there was cheering, yelling, and hand slapping, but this emotion was very new. To sit there and stir in lament for 2 hours while your team is down by 31 is not fun.
To watch the comeback was comforting, but many of us, if we are honest, would truthfully say we were waiting for the final heartbreak. I will be honest here and say that whilst I was at the Fox I was 'texting' with my Dad and my good friend Helmut, I wasn't happy. One message I wrote to Helmut said,
We either need to fire his ass (Leach) before he lands back in town, or give that man a raise.
I sent a message to Dad stating we were within 10 with 8 to play. He replied,
Don't make me hurt again.
I said,
Were Tech, we hurt, thats what we do.
There were crucial stops by the defense. Time saving first downs. Tech scored on every second half possession. But was it too little too late again? May I remind you of the heartbreak in Stillwater in 03.
Being a Tech fan seems like there is a 99% chance in a big game that your heart will get broken. For two hours most of us prepared for that to happen. Would it be a blow out or a nice comeback narrow loss?

it didn't happen and somewhere in a bar in Minneapolis someone is saying, "Typical Minnesota." Boy I know how that feels.
My Dads final text message was,
The outcome was never in doubt.
Sarcasm is indeed genetic.
This feels good and I'm gonna go with it until September despite the hurl of insults from Helmut, who claims I'm pink for leaving his house at halftime. Sorry bro, but I saw the same game you did and leaving one TV for another is not Pink.
Congratulations Tech coaches, players, and fans.....as always the Goin Band from Raiderland rocked.

Final note: I woke my mom (also a Tech grad) up early this morning because I didn't get a phone call from her screaming with glee last night. My suspicion that she didn't know the final outcome was verified. I told her the good news and she admitted that she had stopped watching with 2 minutes to go in the second quarter. She got off the phone to get the paper, then called back and said she did the "happy dance" on the front driveway. I like that because I'm sure there are others and that thought makes me happy.
AGAIN.
Thank you Red Raiders. I was fortunate to DVR the game. I think I will watch the last 10 minutes and overtime at least 400 times before the opener in September. All I need now is the Brian Jensen radio call, and all will be greatness.

Camp Shalom fall season to ends today
GAMEDAY!
The unprepared Texas Tech Red Raiders take the field for the last time in 2006 tonight at the Insight Bowl (7pm on NFL Network). I just want to go on the record now and state, I am not convinced Head Coach Mike Leach has got this team ready to win. I better be wrong. We pay him 1.65 MILLION dollars to have them ready.
Minnesota will be ready. They have beaten some good teams in recent years in post season play, winning three of there last four bowls with some close losses. Here is their recent history.
Music City Bowl-- Virginia 34, Minnesota 31
Music City Bowl-- Minnesota 20, Alabama 16
Sun Bowl-- Minnesota 31, Oregon 30
Music City Bowl-- Minnesota 29, Arkansas 14
MicronPC.com Bowl-- N.C. State 38, Minnesota 30
Sun Bowl Oregon 24, Minnesota 20
Minnesota has a good running game, something that will benefit them well against the Tech Defense. If they can control the clock and finish drives, then I do not think Tech will win.
Honestly, I have no idea how the Tech offense will do against the Golden Gopher defense. Let's hope the Tech offense that played Baylor, and not the one that played Colorado, comes to Tempe. I just have a hard time believing that Tech is ready with only hour and twenty minute practices leading up to the game. That pisses me off frankly. Bowl preparation is also an opportunity to get more repetitions for the underclassmen players on the squad that will be used next season. Maybe develop some damn depth?
We shall see. If they do not win this game, then lets light that fire. Of course, I must confess that I felt similar before the 2004 Holiday Bowl. A performance like that would calm us Techsans down, and provide 9 months of afterglow. We need that erotic like bliss to sustain us through to the Red-Black game, and it would be nice to salvage something from this awful year.

My Uncle Brent better known by my friends as "Camp Shalom" is this years recipient. Brent cooked all night at the TCU tailgate party and probably fed 2000 Tech fans with his old ATO fraternity brothers. Brent also scored me tickets to two home games and provided us with his special brand of humor and fun this season. Thanks again!
