That should be enough, but just to make sure I think Tech needs to win a game in the Big 12 Tournament. Anything after that is gravy going into the NCAA Tournament.
What a season. Every win seemed slim and the losses were frustrating. Since Coach Bob Knight came to Lubbock, I thought his best coaching job was getting Tech into the tournament in his first season. Now I believe that this has been his best work. This team lacked the talent to rebound consistently and forced Tech to maximize its opportunities. This team lost 5 games in a row during Conference play, then went to College Station and turned its season completely around.
The record, the eye socket multiple fracture, the big wins at home, Prince-gate, NEBRASKA meltdown, double OT loss to OSU, and owning the poor Aggies. Now I know why people get off a roller coaster, throw up, and then claim that it was great and want to do it again.
I hate the old saying about owning pets, that its just heartbreak waiting to happen. Barring some divine intervention, this season will end with a loss. We all know that, right? Experience as a seasoned Tech fan tells me that it will be a heart breaker. I know it will be some double clutch off the backboard miracle shot, but until that happens I will continue to hope.
I have said this many times, we are the Red Sox of the Big 12. We're lovable and on any given night we can beat anyone, but I am waiting for our one shining moment. We have our Buckners and Yastrzemskis in many a sport around here. We don't exactly have a Curse to exorcise, but it would be nice to win an outright Championship in either Football or Men's Basketball. No offense to the ladies is intended, but its high time for some Men's sport hardware. Hell, even the Sox won. Next will be the Rangers and then what? Baylor!
That would be just great. Baylor wins a Football or Basketball Championship before Tech. What am I saying? If were the Sox, then they are the Cubs. Somehow that makes me feel better, and now I can focus on my bracketology domination.
Of all the things in Texas Tech athletics, my favorite thing is Senior Night for Texas Tech Men's Basketball. Why is it so special? Because this is the night that all the Seniors hard work in the classroom and on the court in honored. You see, Texas Tech expects its student athletes to graduate. That fact is proved in our Men's Basketball program. Coach Knight had an outstanding record of graduating athletes at Indiana, and now that tradition continues at Texas Tech. Ironic that the king of NOT graduating athletes, Kelvin Sampson, is now the Head Coach at IU. But over exposing his farce isn't my intention here.
After the game, the seniors are allowed to say a few words to the fans. As always, it is a treat to hear Coach Knight speak as well. Having attended one of these occasions before, I can tell you that this event is worth the price by itself. As a person that respects the work of teachers and coaches, I can think of few college programs that honor their students in such a honorable way. I am proud that my school, Texas Tech, does this.
What happens after? Most, if not all of our players do not end up in the NBA. However, most if not all become successful. A testament to the greatest legacy of Coach Knight and his staff. It really isn't about winning basketball games, it is how you win them and who you win them with. No amount of trophies or championship memories can top this day that happens each year.
Texas Tech Seniors:
Darryl Dora-KU has to be happy, he might become the first non Mizzou player to get his jersey retired by MU. Jarrius Jackson-I'm going to miss him. Jon Plefka-I always liked his effort. So outmached by bigger and faster players yet he always fights hard. Tanner Ogden-I predict Tanner is going to have a big game in the next month and kill a giant. LucQuente White-too bad he got hurt last year. Lately I think he has been playing well.
This team of ours gets all it can get out the talent it puts on the floor. We lose 5 straight games, but still are able to sweep #6 Texas A&M and beat #5 Kansas.
I need to get back on the blood pressure medication.
If your noticing I only post about this when we win, its because it takes me 3 days to get over a heartbreak loss. But not tonight!
Guns Up!
Texas Tech 77 at #6 Texas A&M 75
I am sending the Red Raiders a Valentines Day card. This season is like my dating record. Some nice memories, but the bad ones are so awful. I love you until you break my heart again.
Do not believe anything on ESPN either. They may report that the Texas Tech Red Raiders got beat very badly by Missouri. I watched the game myself, it didn't really happen. Several key players did not play, and a great deal of seldom used players saw action. I cannot explain that fully either. Praise be to Coach Knight. Have faith that he will destroy the infidels.
If you hear that the Lady Raiders beat Texas by one point by way of a late three point shot, believe it. This is true.
I'm sure Barry, the biggest Baylor fan alive, is trying to get everyone to go streaking through the quad right now.
I already forgot the score, it matters not. Losing to Baylor is like the feeling you get after you first get in a fender bender that is your fault. That stomach tightening sickness that overcomes your body and makes you near nauseous. That is it exactly.
I would go out and beat on the punching bag at my gym, but there is a sheet of ice on the roads. Vicious coincidence or divine interdiction? Oh, let's make the pain worse and last a while longer. We don't play again for an entire week and when we do, we play KANSAS. At least it is at the USA.
We are heading to the USA in an hour or so. I will post pictures from the game and hopefully report on a win.
I am also hoping that "TSO" will be there and gives us a glimpse of the Insight Bowl trophy.
Never give up!
T-shirt fan sighting: I just went to get the paper and saw a local walking his dogs. One dog, a pit bull aptly named Diesel, was off his leash peeing everywhere. This man had on the cheesiest Dallas Cowboy parka, Longhorn National Champion hat, pajama bottoms, and a black t-shirt that said "Got Weed?". He had a lit cigarette dangling from his mouth that he never removed as he was screaming at Diesel to quote, "Diesel you bitch, get your ass over here I'm yeelin at you!" He might as well be Cousin Eddie incarnate. Thankfully, I do not have a picture. But I did find this on Al Gore's interweb.
I was thinking as I tried to contain my laughter of condescend, "It may be a new year, but it aint a new you, buddy." I wonder if he will get a Florida or Ohio State hat after Monday night?
